If you're seeing any of these, the electronic steering lock is almost certainly the culprit.
Insert the key, nothing happens. ESL hasn't disengaged so the ignition is physically locked.
Works some days, not others. Cold starts fail more often. Classic failing-ESL symptom.
Ignition rotates, you hear nothing. The ECU isn't getting the "all clear" from the ESL.
Nothing illuminates on the dashboard — power stays blocked until the ESL releases.
Steering won't move even with key in position. The ESL is jammed in its locked state.
Especially common on Mercedes W204, A207 and VW Passat B6 — but any European car can develop ESL faults.
Repair where possible, replace only when necessary — and always on site if the vehicle can be accessed.
